Service Description

For designing engineering structures such as breakwaters, storm surge barriers or levees, coastal engineers often need high-quality, detailed wave information as represented by the significant wave height, wave period and mean direction or the two-dimensional wave spectrum. For many situations, the phase-average wave model SWAN provides the required wave information. SWAN can be used as a stand-alone application, but it is also included in the new Delft3D FM Suite as the D-Waves module. Course objective During this Delft3D FM course, attendees will gain a basic theoretical understanding of SWAN waves capabilities and functionalities. Moreover, attendees will learn how to apply the software for research or consultancy studies to simulate waves. Learning outcomes When utilizing SWAN for modeling, attendees will be able to retrieve theoretical and practical knowledge gained in this course. Theoretical: attendees understand • basic wave processes (shoaling, dispersion wave spectra) • where the SWAN wave model is developed for (and where not for) Practical: attendees will know • how to setup a wave simulation in D-Waves • how to make a coupling between the waves and hydrodynamics Who should participate This course is aimed at project engineers, researchers, PhD students with background knowledge in waves (e.g. you know the basic wave processes, spectra and parameters). Online format We’ll be providing an online version of this course. In preparation of the training, we’ll send you all the material and will ask you to install the stand-alone Delft3D Flexible Mesh application on your own machine. While attending the training, it will be essential that you have a sufficiently fast internet connection to support a video call, as well as a headset. The use of Windows is required for the Delft3D courses. Online course dates: Session 1: Tuesday, 12 March 2024, 09:00 PDT (12:00 EDT) until 13:00 PDT (16:00 EDT) Session 2: Thursday, 14 March 2024, 09:00 PDT (12:00 EDT) until 13:00 PDT (16:00 EDT)
